Summary of Investigation of Tests for Vitamin B12 Deficiency

My investigation of tests for vitamin B12 deficiency involved two series of tests, commencing in October 2005 and ending in July 2009:

Summary of Findings

The following test was the most sensitive, and therefore most useful, for diagnosis of vitamin B12 deficiency:

• Serum Methylmalonic acid

The following test was less sensitive, although potentially useful, for diagnosis of vitamin B12 deficiency:

• Serum Total homocysteine

The following tests were found to produce grossly deceptive results, with very limited potential usefulness, for diagnosis of vitamin B12 deficiency:

• Serum vitamin B12
• Active B12 (holotranscobalamin, HoloTC)
• Full blood count
