Summary of Findings

The following test was the most sensitive, and therefore most useful, for diagnosis of vitamin B12 deficiency:

  • Serum Methylmalonic acid

The following test was less sensitive, although potentially useful, for diagnosis of vitamin B12 deficiency:

  • Serum Total homocysteine

The following tests were found to produce grossly deceptive results, with very limited potential usefulness, for diagnosis of vitamin B12 deficiency:

  • Serum vitamin B12
  • Active B12 (holotranscobalamin, HoloTC)
  • Full blood count
