Introduction

I considered the possibility of assay interference, for the following reason:

  • Very significant differences between Westmead, SNP and PaLMS total homocysteine results

What is of particular concern to me is the failure, by the labs, to disclose in their reports the possibility of assay interference. I doubt that many patients, or doctors for that matter, would have any awareness of the possibility of significant errors caused by interferences with immunoassays.

There are many articles on the subject of interferences with immunoassays, some are listed in reference AC01 to AC04, AD05 and AD06.

Warnings from Kit Manufacturer

Here are the warnings about the potential for interference with immunoassays, as given in the package insert provided with some Abbott Diagnostics kits:

Abbott AxSym Homocysteine

Axis Homocysteine EIA

Abbott AxSym Folate

The complete package inserts may be found in reference AD01 to AD05.
